FreshEBT is a mobile app (iOs & Android) founded by Propel Inc. The app empowers food stamp recipients to access and keep track of their food stamp balance and find stores that accept EBT.
Before FreshEBT, there weren’t many quality apps for those who received food stamps. A good amount of the population would call a phone number to get an update on their balance. A process that was both time-consuming and inconvenient. We set out to provide a community that is often overlooked by technology quality experience they deserved.
Originally the app was called Easy EBT but eventually, the Propel team decided to swap the “Easy” for “Fresh”, and Fresh EBT was born. We wanted to create a brand that felt financial yet approachable. For the app icon, I wanted to represent the element of providing for your family and the element of keeping track of finances.
Before getting started on the Visual UI, I consulted with FreshEBT’s UX designer to familiarize myself with the previous app and the changes that have been made in the new wireframes. The goal of the Visual design was to provide a look in feel that felt modern and trustworthy.
FreshEBT pulls data from the state EBT websites. This means Fresh EBT has to follow the state website's account creation requirements, which can be quite hefty. On top of that, each state has unique form fields. This caused FreshEBT's ‘sign up’ flow to become quite the obstacle but we iterated make the long sign up process less painful.
A few months after the launch of FreshEBT the Propel team came back to make design updates to the app. The two main updates were allowing users to switch accounts and changing from a navigation drawer to a navigation bar.
